A bit about flow. If the lead time to deliver a Job/Work is shorter than before, it means the flow has improved. When the flow improves, the capacity of the system improves without any additional investment.
Any work/job would go through 2 states in its journey from start to finish:
1.Touch-time or Processing time. This is that state when the Job is being worked upon
2.Waiting time. This is that state when the job is waiting for someone to work on it. The waiting time is caused by some missing material, clarity, approval or human operator.
It switches often between these two states, creating a series of start-stop-start-stop-start motion.
Most often the total waiting time is multiple times of the touch-time. And hence the biggest opportunity to improve the lead time is not in touch-time but in reducing the waiting time. This makes us domain agnostic - we don't need to become an expert in your operations.
